Police bust alleged copper thieves from G'town

Two Germantown men were arrested over last week by town of Poughkeepsie Police for allegedly stealing copper pipes from a 19th century psychiatric center set for renovations.

Brian Keith Dejoy, 42, and 41-year-old Thomas Edward Carey were charged with third-degree burglary, a felony, Wednesday after police caught them leaving one of the buildings of former Hudson River State Hospital off Route 9 in the town of Poughkeepsie.

According to authorities, an officer, who was at the site, heard the men talking and the sound of the equipment used to remove the copper pipes. He called for back-up and later caught the men as they tried to make their escape.

Even with the worldwide economic downturn, copper prices have been increasing in the last six months and the theft of the metal has been escalating nationally as well.

Apparently the large site has become a Mecca for these types of crimes.

Det. Bruce Griffing of the Poughkeepsie Police said that there have been a number of incidents of this type, almost on a weekly basis.

“They’re been many others up there,” he said.

The site includes a number of structures on about 156 acres.

“It’s like a little city unto itself,” said Griffing of the sprawling complex.

The site is owned by Hudson Heritage CPCR Ventures LLC, a joint Venture of Hudson Heritage LLC and the CPCR Opportunity Fund, an affiliate of The Community Preservation Corporation and has been in the planning stages for more than a decade.

The main hospital building, constructed between 1865 and 1898, was designed by Frederick Clarke Withers and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1889, according to the developers’ web site. The surrounding landscaping is attributed to Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux, the team behind Manhattan’s Central Park and Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, among others.

Plans for the site include hundreds of housing units, a small hotel and a business center.

Both Dejoy and Carey were arraigned in Town of Poughkeepsie Court. The former was remanded the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail or bond, the later was  released on his own recognizance. Both have court dates early in the week.
