Holy Spirit School adds more bus stops in Columbia County

Due to the closing of many of the local Catholic Schools over the years, it has been hard for many local parents who wish their child to be educated in a religious, private school environment to find a simple, feasible place to go. Because of this, the Holy Spirit School in East Greenbush has, for the last two years, been bussing students in from around Columbia County, including Claverack and Hudson.

These bus rides are funded by the Roman Catholic Diocese, and were scheduled to stop after the initial two years, but after much persuasion from the school about the amount of children who really used these services, they agreed to continue the program.

On top of keeping the bus rides, Holy Spirit School has made the decision to switch bus companies, and now they are able to make many more stops at varied locations, from Claverack to Hudson, and —possibly even in Stuyvesant Falls.

Rooney said the stops have not been determined yet, but will be decided based on the number of students interested in the school from each area, and their location. He says the students will get on the bus between 7 a.m. and 7:15 a.m., and will return home between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., possibly even a little sooner. The bus ride will be shared by students at the Academy of Christian Leadership in Valatie.

“There are plenty of excellent public schools around the area, said Roger Rooney, principal, “but if they’re looking for a more private environment, we can give that to them.”

The school was founded in 1961, and according to Rooney, is known primarily for its high academic performance standards, family atmosphere, and extra curriculum, such as faith formation and character-development programs. It is a regional parish school teaching grades pre-k through eight, and at the current time has around 300 students, but is always welcoming more.

Holy Spirit has students bussed in from many different school districts, including Albany, Troy, Averill Park, and New Lebanon, and Rooney believes that is a tribute to the quality of the teaching at the school.

“The dedication of the families to come up to the school and continue their education is really pretty phenomenal. The parents love it, and so do the kids.”

Anyone interested in finding out more about the school or the bus route around Hudson, can call the Holy Spirit office at 518-477-5739, or visit their website at www.holyspiritschooleg.com.

“We’re encouraging anyone in the Route 9 area to inquire,” said Rooney. “We’re the only Catholic School in the area besides Saint Jude’s.”
