Columbia County Restaurant Inspections

Bubba Bean BBQ in Greenport was inspected on Aug. 24. Multiple violations to the health code were found. The back door to the restaurant was found open, with no screen door. There were flies in the kitchen and the kitchen floor was dirty with grease and food debris around the refrigeration units at the time of inspection. The inspector found a large accumulation of grease on a ventilation hood over the grill and fryer area. A can opener was found dirty with dried food debris.

The inspector also found chest freezers with seals that weren’t tight. Sterling iodized salt canisters were found open and thrown out during the inspection. Numerous food items were found open in the kitchen and food debris was found under the slicer. Wiping cloths were not kept in bleach solution, but the inspector noted that gloves were in use and macaroni salad was held cold at 41 degrees.

O’s Eatery in Austerlitz was inspected on Aug. 20. The inspector found unshielded lights in the kitchen and back room off of the kitchen. Gloves were in use, and the inspector noted positively that gravy was held hot at 171 degrees, coleslaw was held at 44 degrees and seafood tags were retained for 90 days.

The Main Street Public House in the village of Philmont was inspected on Aug. 18. No violations of state sanitary code were found, and the inspector noted that gloves were available, and cold holding temperatures were below 45 degrees.


Lagonia’s Pizza and Cafe was inspected on Aug. 17. Several violations were found. An opened box of Rice a Roni on a back shelf was found in the dry storage area. The kitchen floor was found dirty under the refrigeration units and under a dry storage shelf at the back of the kitchen. The kitchen floor was dirty with food debris and grease was found under the stainless steel tables at the front of the kitchen. No hand soap was found at the employee hand wash sink.

A complaint was received by the health department on July 20 concerning a cockroach found in a container of takeout food from Lagonia’s. The complainant purchased takeout food from the establishment and alleges that when they opened one of he containers a cockroach ran out. On the day of inspection no insects were noted within the restaurant. It was indicated during the inspection that the restaurant does have a licensed pesticide applicator every month; Orkin is used for pest control.

Lagonia’s was directed to correct their violations accordingly; failure to comply will result in a finding of violation notice and a date for a formal hearing will be set.

The inspector noted positively that gloves were available and in use, cheese was held at 41 degrees, sauce was held hot above 140 degrees and cold holding temperatures were below 45 degrees.

Church Street Deli in the town of Copake was inspected Aug.12. Areas of the kitchen floor were found dirty with grease around kitchen equipment; grease accumulation was found. Refrigerator units were found dirty on the outside with food debris and grease. Grease accumulation was found on the wall directly behind the grill area. Lights were unshielded throughout the kitchen.

The inspector noted positively that hot holding temperatures were adequate, gloves were available and in use, sauce was held hot at 156 degrees, dressing and tuna salad were held cold at 42 degrees, and all cold holding temperatures were below 45 degrees.


Crellin Community Park in the town of Chatham was inspected on July 8. No violations of state sanitary code were noted during the inspection. The inspector noted that thermometers were in all refrigeration units and cold holding temperatures were below 45 degrees.

The Copake Country Club in Copake was inspected on June 23. Several violations were found. Garbage dumpsters were uncovered and garbage was found on the ground surrounding the dumpsters. No visible thermometers were found in a two-door stainless refrigeration unit in the back of the kitchen. Lights were unshielded in an upstairs walk-in cooler. Eggs were improperly stored in a walk-in cooler, but were moved during inspection. No visible thermometer was found in the walk-in cooler. Areas of the kitchen floor were found in disrepair with raw wood exposed and the kitchen floor was found dirty with food debris and grease. The inspector noted positively that raw chicken was held cold at 41 degrees, gloves were in use and available, seafood tags were retained for 90 days, and dressing was held cold at 43 degrees.

Joe’s Restaurant in Greenport was inspected on June 12. The inside of glass doors of a large, five-door stainless steel refrigeration unit in the kitchen were found dirty with built-up food debris. The top and seals of chest freezers were in disrepair and seals were not tight. No bleach was detected in water for wiping cloths. Holders for soda dispensers at the bar were dirty with build-up, which was a repeat violation. Gloves were available and cold holding temperatures were below 45 degrees.

Good Food Catering in Chatham were inspected on June 15. No violations of state sanitary code were noted during the inspection. Gloves were available and cold holding temperatures were all below 45 degrees; thermometers were found in all refrigeration units.

The Farmers Wife in the town of Ancram was inspected on June 17. A can of Raid ant and roach spray was found on the premises; it was removed during inspection. The prep sink in the kitchen was backed up. Refrigeration temperatures were satisfactory, gloves were available and in use, and a bacteriological water sample was collected at the time of the inspection. Results of the sample are pending.

Dutch Desserts in Kinderhook was inspected on June 17. No violations of state sanitary code were noted during the inspection. Gloves were available and cold holding temperatures were found below 45 degrees.
