Ghent GOP picks candidates

Full Slate of Republican Candidates to Appear on November Ballot
On Tuesday, July 28, the Town Republican Committee held their caucus. The following candidates will appear on the Republican line in the general election this fall: Supervisor Lawrence “Larry” Andrews; Councilman Lawrence “Larry” VanBrunt; Councilwoman Linda Schlegel-Hess; Town Justice - David “Butch” Harrison, Jr.; Town Clerk/Tax Collector Rosemarie Elliott; Town Highway Superintendent Michael Losa and Richard Gardina.
Supervisor Andrews is seeking a third term for the town's top spot. Prior to serving as Supervisor, Andrews served 18 years as a councilman. Over the past four years, under Andrews' direction, the town has completed several major projects and enacted sound policies. These projects include the overhaul of the town hall heating and cooling system, installation of new playground equipment at the town park, and the recently started construction of a new town garage. A new mining overlay district and conservation subdivision law and the completion and passage of an updated comprehensive plan will help ensure the town maintains the rural characteristics residents enjoy.
Andrews is a retired high school math teacher and is married with two grown children and three grandchildren.
Also seeking re-election to continue to serve on the Town Board are Larry VanBrunt and Linda Hess. Van Brunt is seeking his 3rd term as a town councilman and is the appointed Deputy Supervisor for the town. He is retired from the state Department of Transportation where he was a Civil Engineer I. Van Brunt is active in his church and is married with two grown children and five grandchildren.
Schlegel-Hess has been serving on the town board for 13 years and is seeking her fourth term for Town Board. During her tenure, she has served on various town committees and is well versed on town issues. Schlegel-Hess was raised and has lived in Ghent for 53 years. She is employed by the Chatham Central School District and currently serves as a Guidance Secretary at the Chatham Middle School. She also is a member of an all female team of breast cancer survivors competing in dragon boat racing.
David “Butch” Harrision will seek a third term to return to the bench as Town Justice. Harrision had a distinguished career in law enforcement prior to becoming a Town Judge. He retired after 24 years with the State Police and during his tenure he worked in the Bureau of Criminal Investigations. After retiring he served 12 years with the Columbia County District Attorney's Office as Chief Investigator. Harrison has dedicated his life to ensure justice is upheld. He is married, has four grown children, and eight grandchildren.
Rosemarie Elliott is seeking re-election to the position of Town Clerk/Tax Collector. Elliott served as Deputy Town Clerk for nine years prior to becoming Town Clerk. She is a member of the state Town Clerks Association and International Institute of Municipal Clerks. Elliott has resided in the town for over 33 years is married and has two grown children.
For the position of Town Highway Superintendent, Mike Losa is seeking his third term. The Town Highway Superintendent is in charge of overseeing 80 miles of town roads. Losa has overseen many projects ensuring the roads are safe for many years to come. During his recent term as Highway Superintendent Losa purchased two ten-wheel Mack dumptrucks, which let the town save about $50,000 to $60,000 in outside trucking costs. Losa also oversaw the massive clean-up efforts after the December ice storm which required many long hours and days by him and his crew. Currently, the construction of a new highway garage is much anticipated. Losa has overseen the demolition of two buildings and prepared the site for the new garage, saving the town money.
