Unruly Churchtown assistant fire chief charged with DWI

On Aug. 22 at approximately 1:20 a.m., State Troopers at Livingston Eric Buchinsky and Jesse Cort were assigned by the Columbia County 911 to assist the Claverack fire chief with an unruly subject attempting to gain access to a closed roadway — closed due to a state of emergency. Upon arrival, the troopers were able to calm the unruly subject. Further investigation revealed that Vincent Scionti, the assistant Fire Chief for the Churchtown Fire Department, was also on the scene attempting to escort tractor trailers with his personal vehicle, with emergency lights activated on Route 23 near Route 217 in Claverack.

This was a closed section of roadway due to fallen trees and power poles. Upon interviewing Scionti, the troopers detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath, glassy eyes, and impaired speech. Standardized field sobriety tests were administered, all of which Scionti failed. Scionti was placed under arrest for DWI and transported back to the State Troopers’ barracks in Livingston where a positive breath sample of .10 percent blood alcohol content was confirmed.

Scionti was issued traffic tickers and released to appear in the Town of Claverack Court on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.
