VALATIE — Mario’s True Value Home Center, a long-time fixture in Valatie, has been in the planning stages of construction on a new 20,000-square-foot lumber supply warehouse since March, and hopes to have closed on the new location by sometime in early September.
Though the new addition to the home center has been planned for quite some time, Bill Better, the attorney for the project said he feels that things are moving forward smoothly, and stresses that it is not a simple task to get a project like this to the construction phase.
“It’s a relatively complicated process,” said Better, “involving the Columbia County Industrial Development Agency, the Columbia County Economic Development Corporation, and the New York Business Development Corporation.”
Despite the procedures involved though, the attorney is glad to say that Mario’s is making good progress.
The next step will be to begin construction, which Better says he hopes will be completed before winter.
Better is also says that despite the current recession, Mario’s is happy with the pace at which the project is moving, and confident the expansion will be good for the company as a whole.
“Mario’s Home Center looks forward to this expansion even in these trying economic times,” he said. “We have been very lucky under the direction of Ken Flood.”
The new facility, purchased by Mario’s five years ago, will be located in the open space just south of the Route 9H overpass, and according to owner and President Peter Palleschi, will be a state-of-the-art two-aisle drive-through structure. The move will free up space at Mario’s home store for retail equipment and hardware.
The team at Mario’s would expressed their gratitude toward the Village of Valatie for helping them throughout the entire process.
“The Village of Valatie has been very supportive of this project, and Mario’s is extremely grateful,” Better told the Register-Star.”
Valatie Mayor Gary Strevell is equally thankful to Palleschi and Mario’s for working so readily with the village and for keeping their business within it’s boundaries.
“It’s certainly a benefit to our community,” said Strevell. “It was a concern he would move outside the community, but he’s tried very hard to stay in Valatie.”
Better went on to say that this teamwork is one of the best parts of the upcoming project — it’s something completely homegrown, with Mario’s being a local, family owned business, assisted by the village of Valatie, and even by First Niagara Bank, for which local resident John Antalek is the loan officer.
“First Niagara has really taken a leadership roll in providing financing,” he said.
With all this help from all sides of the community, both Better and Palleschi are confident this new addition to the hardware store will be a success.
“We are planning for tomorrow,” the owner said previously. “We’re thankful to have a devoted staff and loyal customers.”
