Pipe bursts, floods Edwards Elem. school
By Andrew Amelinckx
HUDSON—The Hudson City School District continues to cleanup after a broken water pipe at John L. Edwards Elementary School in Hudson left around two inches of water in the building’s halls.
“It happened over the weekend,” said District Superintendent Jack Howe. “No one was in the building.”
Howe said the break occurred between maintenance shifts and was discovered by a maintenance worker Sunday morning.
The break occurred on the main floor. Water made its way two floors below, into several storage closets and onto part of the gym floor.
It didn’t affect the new construction, said Howe, or find its way into the school’s classrooms or offices.
JLE is under construction as a new library media center is being built along with special education classrooms.
The accident, said Howe, won’t affect the completion of construction or the school’s opening Sept. 10.
Howe said they were assessing the damage with the district’s insurance company.
He said they were concerned about the possibility of mold.
“We’re monitoring and testing,” he said.
The cause of the burst pipe is unknown. Howe speculated that it could have been due to age.
“Had it happened when someone was there,” he said, “it would have been a 10 minute inconvenience.”
