Hall of Fame — Lawrence ‘Red’ Schroeder, Athlete, Class of 1955
![]() |
Lawrence (Larry) “Red” Schroeder was probably one of the finest athletes of his time to ever grace the halls of CHS. He was a four sport athlete who was well rounded in each and every sport that he played.
He played one year of junior varsity in baseball, football and track and then went on to the varsity squad. In basketball, due to his outstanding ability, he started his freshman year on JV for one game and was immediately elevated to the varsity team. Sports stats for the early 1950s are non-existent, but based on information gathered from former colleagues, it was learned that he was a “sure shot.” Two different sources related that when he went for a basket, there was no doubt he would make it. In a game in New Lebanon, he hit a half-court shot that put Chatham in the lead in the county. According to sources, this was not unusual, but this one stood out because it led the Chatham team to the county championship in 1954-55. After his graduation in 1955, he received a full athletic scholarship for basketball to Syracuse University.
Schroeder was also a very good pitcher and took the baseball team to a tie for the county association. He was also a quarterback and fullback on the football team.
After college, he remained active in the sports community as a referee in many Columbia County games. He died in June 2006, leaving behind a wife and daughter.
This year’s induction is being sponsored by the Lofgren Agency and Metz Wood Harder Insurance and also supported by the generous donations of the following local businesses and individuals: Michael Knabbe, Muriel Faxon, Chatham Wine and Liquor, Callander’s Nursery, Drs. Greitzer and Curry, the Dairy Queen and First Niagara Bank.
All of the inductees will be introduced during half-time at the Chatham football game Friday, Sept. 25. The banquet honoring new Hall members will be held Saturday, Sept. 26 at Winding Brook Country Club. Cocktails and conversation begin at 6 p.m., with dinner following at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $28 and can be purchased at the high school office, Metz Wood Harder office or by calling Jane Wood at (518) 392-3276 or Nancy Knabbe at (518) 392-2235.
