Austerlitz toddler dies in ATV accident
AUSTERLITZ — A three-year-old girl has been killed after allegedly being thrown from an all-terrain vehicle operated by her eight-year-old brother off Herrington Drive in Austerlitz.
Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. reported that at 6:44 p.m. Spencertown Fire Company First Responders, Chatham Rescue Squad and Deputy Sheriff Louis Bray were dispatched by County 911 to an ATV accident at 100 Herrington Drive in the Town of Austerlitz. As a result of the accident, two children were transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital where a three-year-old girl died a short time later from injuries sustained in the accident.
Although still investigating, at this time it appears that an eight-year-old boy along with his three-year-old and ten-year-old sisters were with their father house sitting at a residence on Herrington Drive. The eight-year-old boy was operating a 2002 Kawasaki “Mule” 3010 ATV with his two sisters as passengers. The ATV was apparently borrowed from the home owner who was away. The father and children went to a neighbor's residence where the eight-year-old was operating the ATV on the driveway just off of Herrington Drive and struck a tree and the three-year-old girl was ejected and then pinned under the ATV which rolled over on top of her.
The father and a friend were nearby and called for emergency help. The 10-year-old sister did not appear to be injured.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene and immediately began life saving techniques. The Chatham Rescue Squad transported the victim to the Columbia Memorial Hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The eight-year-old boy was transported by the Philmont Rescue Squad to the Columbia Memorial Hospital for facial injuries.
The father and children are from the Copake - Hillsdale area.
Sheriff Harrison, who was on the scene, said the investigation is continuing by Deputy Sheriff Bray, Investigator Mark Dunspaugh, the Sheriff's Office Incident/Accident Scene Investigation Unit and County Coroner Angelo Nero. Undersheriff James R. Sweet and Captain David Bartlett also responded.

" The father should not be condemmed here, he is suffering enough as are all the people who knew and loved this family. If people were so concerned for this family they would not be posting hurtful words about it. "

" How dare you post such hurtfull words, Do u know this family? Do u know how much this father loves his children? NO, so keep your hurtfull words to your self. Skylar had AMAZING parents that loved her and would do ANYTHING for her....This was a horrible tragedy....a ACCIDENT!!!! "

" First off noone should be condemmed here.. This whole family is suffering more than you could know..could you imagine losing one of your children esp at the age of 3!!! than hearing words as this. This was a horrible accident, this article also does not explaine this whole situation. If this man knew his daughter was in danger do you even think that he would put her in that situation? How many times have yourself or children made these actions. not thinking that an accident would occur and a death would take place. They have to live with this tragedy forever and this poor little boy who was driving has to live with this and to have people spread all of these horrible words about the father, family ect, is just plain wrong. They loved her more than any of you could ever know, And the Zoril46 how many common sense acts have you not followed? How do you know the father was not standing right there watching the boy drive this who by chance has probably driven this many times. It is not like these children where driving around in a "ATV" wthout any supervision , I am pretty sure there were more than enough adults there during this situation. If he knew his daughter was going to be killed do you think he would have even thought to put her on that ride? No he would not have..unfortunatly this is life, this is how we live and learn and unfortunatly a little giril was lossed due to this but this is by far noone's fault, it was a accident and these parents and family need support, love and guidance..NOT critisiscm or blamed or put down..just try to put your self in that place.. they know what happened and you really do not other than what these papers, the news and the radio say.. does that mean it's the truth no!!! so keep your unkind words to yourself during this tragic time and let this family cope and grieve in peace...
Heaven has a new beautiful angel to look over her family..God has a purpose for everything, no matter what that may be, even something like this that makes no sense to us at all, cause anger and resentment towards god, but for some odd reason she was needed by him for another purpose and i am positive that purpose is great, greater than we could ever know. she will live on forever in everyone's hearts and souls regardless if you knew her or not, she is and will always be her mommy and daddy's little girl...RIP Skylar... " How dare I post hateful words? Are you kidding? None of my words are hateful. I posted a common sense post. Look at the accident for what it was--senseless! This did not need to happen. Those words are not hateful but full of common sense.
I do feel for him in the loss of his daughter. It is sad to lose a child. "

" While grief and sadness this family feels is beyond comprehension I'm sure, the fact remains that people (where are you??) need to begin speaking out against these horribly dangerous "toys" that seem so pervasive in rural areas and are treated by those who use them as almost a god given right. The first commenter is absolutely correct. Why on earth do people let young children DRIVE these things??? They are unsafe for people who are adult sized. In addition, they smell, they pollute , tear up the land, annoy others with their noise and waste gas. (All minor concerns compared to the unspeakable dangers posed by the vehicles). Who do we keep accepting these horrific accidents and write them off as just that when the evidence for how dangerous they are is as plane as the nose on one's face?? "

" It's people like you who sit up on your high horses and insist that these things can be prevented. Granted it's a tragedy, but as someone with a large family, I know of many people who have driven ATV's, tractors, lawn mowers, etc at the age of 8. Seriously....think about the things you post before you do. If this were you I'm sure it would crush you to have the public sit there and point fingers. No normal person would ever put their child in harms way, and thats simple fact. Common sense is great, but put a filter on it! "

I pray that a law would be passed to prevent anyone under the age of 18 from driving ATV's. "
