CLAVERACK — A Claverack man is in jail for allegedly forcibly touching an 11-year old’s genitals at the end of June.

John E. Race Jr., 23, was arrested by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Monday and charged with first-degree sexual abuse, a class D felony.

Race allegedly touched the young girl at a house in Philmont and then physically threatened the girl if she told anyone about the incident.

Sgt. Michael Merante of the Sheriff’s Office began the investigation after the girl’s father called the agency Monday.

Sheriff’s Investigator’s Mark Dunspaugh and Patrick Logue arrested Race around 6 p.m. Monday. He was arraigned in the Village of Philmont Court by Judge Rick Tracy and remanded to the county jail in lieu of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bail bond.

He is scheduled to return to court 5:15 p.m. today.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking that anyone with information about similar activities by Race contact them at 518-828-4316.
