Letter — A heartfelt thanks to my heroes
Single and by myself, not knowing a soul, I took a leap of faith and moved to the place that has beckoned my spirit for years, leaving behind family, friends and financial security. As far back as I remember I have been enchanted by the hometown quality of Chatham.
After the movers brought in the last box containing my beloved Beatle records, I wondered if I had made the right decision. In spite of a few “bumps in the road,” the answer is a resounding YES! Little did I know at the time that it would be the Chatham Fire Department, who five years later would “rescue” that very same collection.
This letter is dedicated to the folks who remind me that my decision to settle in Chatham was a good one. Those to whom I refer are my friends, neighbors and especially, the members of the Chatham Fire and Police departments.
The weather has gone crazy. I’ve grown used to the occasional 1-2 inches of water that collect in my basement if we have particularly harsh weather. Today [Friday], however, was quite a different story. After a few minutes of a blinding downpour, I checked my basement and was panic-stricken when the water from Mother Nature’s wrath began to creep UP the stairs. I called the Chatham Police who advised me to call 911. I felt ashamed because this was clearly not a case of life or death, although John, George, Paul and Ringo were in danger of being lost forever. As soon as my heroes in their cumbersome attire arrived, I had the gift of knowing that my sense of security would soon be restored … and it was. They came, they pumped and they conquered the rains that were threatening my shelter and my link to this spectacular community, my home. They care! What a feeling!
I can’t begin to express how wonderful it feels to be part of a community comprised of good people, so willing to help each other in times of stress and need. I am so blessed to have my precious family, good friends, good neighbors AND our “Guardian Angels,” folks from a tiny spot on the world map … my heroes. Thank you Chatham Police and Fire departments for giving me a gift that is positively priceless, the gift of peace of mind.
