Giants defense has 11 interceptions in 4 practices
ALBANY (AP) — Eli Manning and fellow quarterbacks David Carr, Andre Woodson and Rhett Bomar are completing far too many passes to the defense in the first two days of the New York Giants’ training camp.
The defense has intercepted 11 passes in the first four practices, grabbing six more in the two workouts at the University at Albany on Tuesday.
Cornerback Terrell Thomas and linebacker Danny Clark had one each in the morning, while free agent safety Vince Anderson had two and cornerback Corey Webster and linebacker Bryan Kehl had one apiece in the afternoon.
Thomas noted that the offense is young and that it is still trying to get going.
“But right now we are trying not to give them an inch,” Thomas said. “We are trying to be real dominant this year. The front office made some transactions with the defensive line and (linebacker Michael) Boley and the secondary, we are hungry to prove we are not going to be the weak link of the defense. We are trying to lead.”
Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride was clearly frustrated in the morning, telling the offense to wake up, among other things.
Coach Tom Coughlin realizes that it’s going to take time for the offense to click with veteran receivers Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer gone. Toomer signed with Kansas City on Tuesday.
“It’s early, but I’m not very patient, so I’d like to see some more progress out of them,” Coughlin said. “On offense it’s got to be more than a good play, bad play. You know what I mean? We can make a big play, and everybody remembers it, but to me, at least, it’s come back and let’s get the next play.”
— With Amani Toomer now with the Chiefs and Plaxico Burress out of football, receiver Steve Smith got himself in shape by running a dune at Manhattan Beach in California.
“Any day you go out there, you’ll see actors, NFL stars and all kinds of athletes out there working, even just regular people out there having a good time because it’s just such a cool hill. It’s ridiculous,” Smith said.
Smith said his trainer told him about the hill because running it is an incredible workout.
“It’s extremely steep and it is all sand,” said Smith, who led the Giants with 57 catches last season. “They have stairs on the left that you can go work on, too.”
Smith ran a great deep pattern in Tuesday morning’s workout, beating both Kevin Dockery and Travonti Johnson. However, he dropped the bomb. He made up for that in the afternoon, beating cornerback Aaron Ross for a long touchdown.
