‘Hoopla’ celebrates community

The Village of Valatie and the Valatie Economic Revitalization Association (VERA) once again played host to a community-centered event, which they affectionately entitled “the V-Ville Hoopla.”
This particular Hoopla featured events geared towards community members ranging all across the age spectrum, with live bands, tag sales, street vendors, and even a rock climbing wall. Tic-tac-toe and hopscotch boards were scattered around the streets for children and adults alike, and those who were interested took a few minutes out of their busy schedule to pet and get their pictures taken with ponies brought in by Kinderfarm.
“VERA once again put together a great event for our village,” Valatie Mayor Gary Strevell told the Register Star. “My appreciation goes out to all who worked so hard to make it happen. I’m already looking forward to next year.
People from Valatie and the surrounding communities crowded the streets, walking from booth to booth and store to store, checking out everything Main Street had to offer, as well as a few additions, brought in special for the event.
According to VERA President Jenn Furey, the event also showcased vendors selling everything from food to arts and crafts, as well as over 20 tag sales, all vying for the attention of the community. On top of that, regular local businesses were having sidewalk sales and offering great bargains, in some cases up to 60 percent off.
“These [events] take a lot of effort,” said Mayor Strevell previously, “and we certainly appreciate it. Volunteers are really what make Valatie work.”
The Valatie Community Theater played a large part in the festivities, hosting Bill Williams with Cruisin’ 93.5-FM at the theater from 10 a.m. to noon, and popular local band “The Reverberators” played live music later on while the younger kids danced and jumped on a full size inflatable bouncy-bounce outside to the beat of the music, all provided free of charge by the Village of Valatie. Rounding out the day, The Valatie Community Theater presented musical group “ Ampersand and Friends,” a group of musicians that interpret music from the folk and old-time American traditions on modern instruments with lush vocal harmonies, and live instrumentals.
VERA, the host of the event, is a not-for-profit, community development corporation working with a volunteer group of residents, friends, and business owners to promote, maintain, and encourage the civic, social, commercial, tourism and economic activity in Valatie and the surrounding areas.
“Meleinda Kerner of The Lil Toy Store put this event together for VERA and she did smashing job,” said Furey. “The sidewalks were full of people discovering Valatie perhaps for the first time or just all over again, it was just a great to see everybody having such a fun time!”
Anyone who would like to join the organization, or help out with future events can call 758-7800. Questions about the Valatie Summer Concert Series, or other upcoming VERA events can also be directed to this number.
