SARATOGA SPRINGS (AP) — Backtalk prevailed by a neck over Enumerate and Louisvilleluminary at the end of a four-horse stretch contest to win the 95th running of the $150,000 Sanford Stakes for 2-year-olds at Saratoga Race Course.

Backtalk overtook Enumerate in the final strides of the 6-furlongs race run in 1:10.07. Five horses were within two lengths at the wire.

The Tom Amoss-trained Backtalk, undefeated in three starts including the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs on July 3, paid $5.00, $3.00 and $2.70. Enumerate returned $4.00 and $3.40, and Louisvilleluminary paid $4.00 to show.

Backtalk earned $90,000 for Goldmark Farm, which owns the son of Smarty Jones.

NY officials, bidders meeting on track’s VLTs

ALBANY — After eight years that included antigambling campaigns, a governor’s resignation in disgrace, the bankruptcy of the state racing association and the start of the economic recession, New York officials are returning to plans to put thousands of video lottery machines at Aqueduct thoroughbred race track.

Staff from the governor’s office and legislative leaders were meeting this week with representatives of six bidders who want to land the contract to install 4,500 VLTs at New York City’s race track, says Morgan Hook, a spokesman for Gov. David Paterson.

According to the New York Racing Association, the state would gain about $1 million a day if the VLTs operated at Aqueduct. NYRT officials say that with tracks in Pennsylvania and other nearby states offering video slots, New York is missing an opportunity to boost its own racing industry.

New York has eight racinos operating, seven at harness tracks and one at a thoroughbred track near Rochester. But Aqueduct, smack in the middle of the densely populated New York City-Long Island area, is the big prize.

New York’s $2.5 billion thoroughbred industry accounts for 30,000 jobs at breeding farms and racetracks, plus thousands of other jobs in such businesses as feed suppliers and veterinary services, said Jeffrey Cannizzo, executive member of the 1,000-member New York Thoroughbred Breeders.

Haskell lands 2 out of 3 Triple Crown race winners

OCEANPORT, N.J. — Already sitting pretty with Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra and Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird for Sunday’s Haskell Invitational, Monmouth Park’s president went for the trifecta last week: He raised the prize money a quarter-million dollars to $1.25 million, hoping to entice Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird into the field.

It didn’t work. Mine That Bird will run as planned in Saturday’s West Virginia Derby, but having two out of three Triple Crown race winners in the Haskell is not bad at all.

Rachel Alexandra was made the 4-5 favorite over Summer Bird and five other colts in Thursday’s draw. The 3-year-old filly brings a seven-race winning streak into her second start against the boys.

The 42nd edition of the race will be the first time a Preakness winner and Belmont winner have met in the Haskell since 1987, when Belmont winner Bet Twice edged Derby and Preakness winner Alysheba in what many consider the best Haskell.

Rachel Alexandra will be ridden again by Calvin Borel and leave from the No. 6 post. Munnings, winner of the Tom Fool and the Woody Stephens in his last two starts, was the surprise 3-1 second choice.

Summer Bird was the 7-2 third choice for his first start since beating Dunkirk and Mine That Bird in the Belmont in just the fifth race of his career. The son of Birdstone will be ridden by Kent Desormeaux, and leave from the No. 2 post. Also entered are Bunker Hill (30-1), Duke of Mischief (15-1), Arkansas Derby winner Papa Clem (12-1) and Atomic Rain (10-1).

HASKELL NOTES: The 2003 Haskell produced a record crowd of 53,368, and racing officials believe that mark could fall. “I am hoping we have a bigger crowd than that,” New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority chairman Carl Goldberg said. In ‘03, Peace Rules defeated Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide, who ran third.
