King Fish reigns supreme at Lebanon Valley; Harrington 2-for-2

Goewey, Yetman win checkers
WEST LEBANON — Hot summer nights at the Lebanon Valley Speedway have been few and far between this season. But as the red hot sun began its descent into the western hills Saturday, it was very clear that the weather was not going to be a part of the racing program.
The first order of business was to complete the held-over, rain-delayed Freihofer’s Baking Budget Sportsman 20-lap feature event from July 18. It was very clear from the start that the full field of 26 cars was going to have its hands full.
But by lap 3, the 1 of Jason Harrington took control of the field and never looked back. Don Miller finished second followed by Kevin Ward, Scott Duell and Brian Peterson to complete the top five.
Later on in the evening, Harrington came right back and was awarded the victory in the second 20-lap Budget Sportsman Feature event after the 77 was DQd for illegal carburetor spacers. Kevin Ward, Don Miller, Michael Sabia and Joe Carnibucci completed the top-five finishers.
NBT Bank, Hein’s Auto Car and Adirondack Tire then began their program of events and the 27 Modifieds took to the speedway for their 30-lap feature event.
Rich Salisbury took control early over the 87 of Hector Stratton but Stratton wanted the point and took it on lap 4. Caution flew for the 518 of Kyle Sheldon and on the restart, Stratton again pulled out to a comfortable lead, but on his tail was the 55K of the King Fish, Mike King.
Everything changed on lap 8 as Stratton’s 87 slowed in turn four and pulled pitside with mechanical issues. That left the 55K to take aver the hot seat with just nine circuits completed on the Kokosa Oil lap counter.
The show wasn’t over quite yet as the big guns were coming. Last week’s winner, Kenny Tremont Jr; Andy Bachetti, Donnie Corellis and Eddie Marshall were all making their way through the field to get a shot at the 55K.
Caution flew on lap 10 for heavy contact between the 34B of Bachetti, the 57 of Corellis and the 98 of Marshall, forcing the 98 into the outside wall and ending his night. Back at the front, King was still in command with the 60 of Brian Berger hot on his heals waiting to pounce with the slightest mistake.
But before that could happen, Tremont powered his 115 by and jumped into the runner-up position. Even with two late-race cautions King was on target to score just his second career Modified win at the Valley of Speed. Tremont finished second followed by Berger, Corellis and Donnie Ackner in the top five.
The Sportsman 20-lap feature event was next and Jeff Kelly brought the field to the green, taking control of the top spot early. But Kelly’s lead was relatively shortlived as the 2 of K.C. Goewey shot into second by lap 5 and began dogging the 44 for the lead. By lap 11, Goewey charged out front and took over the front of the field.
The only caution flew on lap 15 but it nearly just delayed the inevitable. Goewey scored the win at the checkers followed by Danny Sanchez, Kelly, Kyle Armstrong and Alan Houghtaling to complete the top five.
The Pro Stock feature event was not short of its excitement as well, as the 7 of Rob Yetman took control of the lead from his inside pole starting position by lap 8 from the 35 of Rick Dempsey. By lap 9, the 8 of Jay Corbin rolled into the runner-up spot and began hounding Yetman for the lead.
Even with a few more cautions just to make it interesting, Corbin just could not make it stick as Yetman returned to victory lane, followed by Corbin, Kevin Arnold, Paul LaRochelle and Rick Dempsey completing the top five.
Paul Engwer scored the win in the Limited Pro Stock division.
The Pure Stock division was in full force as well with 46 strong in three events. The winning drivers were: PS1: Jason Meltz; PS2: Ray Hall Sr.; and PS3: Al Relyea.
On Sunday the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series presented by Carquest and Castrol Oil returned along with the Benjamin Moore Paints 358 Super Series Syracuse 150 Qualifier; Craig Dollansky won the Sprint Car series with Tom Faxon capturing the Syracuse 150 Qualifier.
On Saturday the Sheldon Oil Services and Heavy Hauler first-ever Modified Shootout takes place at LVS. In addition, the LV/Accord Budget Sportsman Series returns to the Valley of Speed, and Royal Garage is also offering a special $3,000-to-win Modified Feature.
