GREENPORT—An old flag that flew above the Capitol in Washington, D.C. is new again and safely in the Hudson area. The flag was dedicated by United States Senator Kirsten Gilllibrand Sunday morning at Congregation Anshe Emeth on Joslen Boulevard.

Members of American Legion Post 184 were there to raise the flag, fire a ceremonial shot, and stand at attention during the dedication ceremony.

Senator Gillibrand has some personal connections to the congregation. Synagogue member Judge Roger J. Miner of the Second Circuit Appellate Court was one of her first employers out of law school. Judge Miner’s brother, Lance Miner, is the Congregation President at Anshe Emeth.

Jackie Miner, Judge Miner’s wife and also a congregation member, had the original idea to get a new flag. “She noticed that our flag was old, faded and tattered,” said Lance Miner. “So she called the Senator.”

“We don’t usually have a flag-raising ceremony, but under the circumstances...” Lance Miner said to congregation members, who gathered on the synagogue lawn as the ceremony opened.

Judge Miner spoke warmly of Gillibrand. “You keep your eye on Kirsten. She’s going some places,” he said. “She manages to do everything and to do it brilliantly.” He said it was the first time in his memory a senator had visited Congregation Anshe Emeth.

Gillibrand thanked the congregation for inviting her and spoke briefly of national security in regard to places of worship, mentioning a recent terrorist threat made on a Riverdale Synagogue in the Bronx. “We’ve had some scares over the last several months,” she said. “It reminds us how important it is that we must continue to keep our places of worship safe.”

As a senator, Gillibrand now serves on the Committee on Foreign Relations. She mentioned the 2009 Urban Areas Security Initiative, which provides funding support for target-hardening activities to nonprofit organizations that are judged to be at high risk for terrorist attack and are located within urban areas.

Gillibrand said that for August Recess, she’s going to take her children on a trip through western New York, “with my last stop being the Delaware County Fair.” She said she was excited to do things her five-year-old, Theodore, would enjoy, including a tour of the Lockheed Martin factory.

She’ll also take five full days off from the political circuit. “I just needed some downtime with my kids,” she said.
