Namesake Celebration sails into the weekend

HUDSON — Saturday was day two of the Namesake Celebration, and the second day for the riverfront park to try on its new name: Henry Hudson Riverfront Park.

The community embraced the party, relaxed on the Hudson River, admired the scenery and stood by in  anticipation of Saturday’s main event: Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, the headliner of the Namesake Celebration Gala Concert and grandson of Pete Seeger.

The Halve Maen, the full size replica of Henry Hudson’s vessel, brought about 500 guests onboard for tours on Saturday and sold everything from postcards to T-shirts to necklaces in the shape of the ship.

“It’s going great,” said First Mate Bob Hansen, who is originally from Albany. “We’ve been doing very well on the postcards and also on the new T-shirts.”

Hansen has been with the ship three years. “It takes a lot of time,” he said. “I’ve been sailing for about 30 years.” His last ship, The Schooner Ernestina, was a recognized historical landmark and one of two remaining sailing Arctic exploration vessels. It recently went out of service.

Hansen said he got on the Halve Maen because the opportunity came at the right time. “They set out a call for sailors. I thought, ‘Hey, it’s local!’,” he said.

Tavaris Grant, Mounanou Badila, Joe Seserman, and Theo Hammond got into the mix, volunteering to help sell “Henry On A Stick”, one of the celebration’s official souvenirs. “I asked their boss, ‘Can I help sell them?”, and they said ‘yes,’” said Grant.

“There’s been many people. Everyone else had one,” said Badila, “so it’s kind of like, monkey see, monkey do.”

Grant, Badila, Seserman and Hammond said they had sold around 40 of the heads on a stick.

The Stuyvesant Historical Society was by the river all day, selling T-shirts and increasing awareness about the Stuyvesant Falls Hydroelectric Plant, which will open soon. The historical society will dedicate a water power kiosk in Stuyvesant Falls August 8.

“From all reports from our table, they had a really brisk business. Everybody was really interested,” said Stuyvesant historian Juanita Knott.

Knott used to work part-time for the Columbia County Historical Society and recalled an unbelievable question once asked. “Someone asked me, how did Henry Hudson get the ship up the Kinderhook Creek?” she said. “I guess he missed that day of history.”

The Stuyvesant hydroelectric plant was built in 1900. In 2003, President Bush signed a bill that included a special provision to reinstate the federal license for the plant and transfer the license to the town of Stuyvesant. It’s another piece of history being honored and brought into public view, just like the Namesake Celebration is doing with the legacy of Henry Hudson. “It’s like that saying. Everything old is new again,” said Knott.
