11 July 4 DWI arrests reported by Dutchess Sheriff’s Office

DUTCHESS COUNTY — Dutchess County Sheriff’s Deputies were out in force over the July 4 weekend looking for drunk drivers and apparently found a number of them. Eleven people were charged with driving while intoxicated by the agency from July 3 through 5.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, besides its regular patrols, the county’s Stop DWI officer was out on patrol as were a number of other officers in what the agency calls “DWI Saturation Patrols.” They were funded by the Dutchess County STOP-DWI program.
The program is part of a state effort to curb alcohol related fatalities and was begun in 1980. Its funded through the fines — about $22 million a year — collected from drinking and driving related offenses.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol related fatalities and injuries will affect one in three Americans during their lifetime. Across the country, close to 12,000 people died from alcohol related motor vehicle crashes in 2008, or about 32 percent of the total number of auto accident fatalities that year.
The targeted, local approach to DWI enforcement seems to be working. From 1981 to 2000 the percent of alcohol related crash fatalities as compared with all crash deaths in New York State decreased by almost half, from 44.1 percent to 23.13.
The following were charged with DWI by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office over the weekend, according to the agency:
Ryan Grossnickle, 20, of East Fishkill
Mira Zavatsy, 46, of Poughkeepsie
Wakeelah Warfield, 30, of Poughkeepsie
Vanessa Duffy, 26, of Poughkeepsie
Wendy Williams, 41, of Wappingers Falls
Joshua Brenna, 20, of Bedford Hills
Sandeep Kumar, 41, of LaGrange
Lincoln Sharpe, 38, of Tempe, Ariz.
Michael Baker, 22, of Poughkeepsie
John Marshall Jr., 23, of Poughkeepsie
Soren Wilhelmsen, 22, of Poughkeepsie
