Porreca announces for Council presidency
By Jamie Larson
HUDSON — John Porreca has announced he will run for Hudson Common Council president. He is running as a Republican and Conservative and is seeking the endorsement of the Independence Party as well.
Current Council President John Cody is not seeking re-election. Porreca will be challenged for the open seat by Donald Moore, who announced his candidacy last month and is endorsed by the Democrats.
Porreca is no stranger to Hudson politics. He served for three years as 3rd Ward alderman in the late 1990’s and ran twice previously for the president’s chair in 2001 and 2005. On his first attempt he lost by five votes.
Porreca currently works at the Brookwood Secure Center in Claverack, where he teaches property management to the troubled youths. He says he loves to teach and works with children at the Hudson Youth Center and volunteers at Bible Baptist Church in Ghent. Porreca says providing programs and attention to Hudson’s children is an important part in keeping them away from activities that could land them in Brookwood.
Porreca also worked for may years at Columbia Memorial Hospital as the environmental services director, and feels the city could also do more to provide programs for senior citizens.
When serving as alderman Porreca sat on the committees for police, finance, public safety and fire. He also worked on the project to revitalize the Hudson waterfront. Porreca says he is happy to see residents using the park but that the process of getting the area to it’s full potential should be a higher priority on the council’s list. “I wasn’t happy with the slow progress of the waterfront,” he said.
Porreca thinks that the Common Council can often be unproductive due to constant bickering and unorganized discussion. He believes this can be remedied with strong but diplomatic leadership from the Council president.
“The Common Council needs to get together and be more aggressive in their approach,” he said, “and they need to get things done. The president needs to have control and show some direction and leadership skills.”
Porreca said many times when he was on the Council he would slam his fist on the table in frustration trying to get things done. “What I’m saying is, ‘let’s get to the root of the problems as quickly as possible.’” He said, “No one should forget that we represent the people of the city of Hudson.”
The Council is made up primarily of Democrats. Though he is a Republican, Porreca said he is a people person and has an open mind, which he feels is conducive to problem solving. “Lets show integrity when we lead.”
Porreca, like all announced city candidates, opposes the proposed county plan to move the Department of Social Services out of Hudson to the old Ockawamick school building in Claverack.
Porreca has lived in Hudson all his life. He and his wife Dawn have two grown sons, John and Michael, who have given them three grandchildren.
