Barbara Beakes Lee

Barbara Beakes Lee, 95, of Clermont, NY, died peacefully Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at her home.

Born January 19, 1914, in Wilmington, DE, she was the daughter of Crosby Jordan Beakes and Gertrude Hulse Beakes of White Plains. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1935 and from Teacher’s College at Columbia with a Masters degree the next year. She taught high school in White Plains for a short time before continuing her education at the University of Mexico in Mexico City.

Barbara joined the USO in the early 1940’s, and traveled from Jamaica to Panama to Cuba, establishing clubs and restaurants for enlisted men. On May 9, 1947, in Havana, Cuba, she married Charles H. Lee. He predeceased her in 1955.

In April 1958 she and her children moved from Cuba to Clermont and she taught briefly at Germantown Central School. In August 1960 she established Barbara Lee Travel Service Inc. in Rhinebeck, NY. She remained active as president during its more than 40 year operation.


Barbara was an active member of the Rhinebeck Chamber of Commerce in its infancy, and was also a member of the early Northern Dutchess Business & Professional Women’s Association.

She is survived by her daughter: Norris V. Lee of Rhinebeck, four sons and their wives: John W. and Kathy Lee of San Antonio, TX, Robert F. and Sandy Lee of Cumberland, MD, Richard D. and Judy Lee of Virginia Beach, VA, and Charles H. and Anne Lee of Cockeysville, MD, a sister: Norris Beakes Swaner of Rhinebeck, two nieces: Linda Swaner Sanchez of Garrison, NY, and Catherine Kahle of Red Hook, NY. In addition, she is survived by her 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren to whom she was lovingly known as “Abuela”.

Memorial donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244 www.komen.org, or the American Red Cross, 103 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

Services will be private, and there will be no calling hours.

MagdalenaR. Schneider

COXSACKIE — Magdalena R. Schneider, 64, of West Coxsackie passed away on June 26, 2009 at Benedictine Hospital, Kingston.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the W.C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie on Monday, June 29, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Coxsackie with Rev. Fr. J. Moyna, pastor the celebrant.

Interment will follow in the family plot of St. Mary’s Cemetery, Coxsackie.

VictoriaSmith-Friedman

CHESTERTOWN, MD — Dr. Victoria Smith-Friedman, MD, MPH, of Chestertown, formerly of Albany and Kinderhook, NY, passed peacefully in her home on June 25, 2009. She was 87.

She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Puerto Rico, her medical degree from Laval University of Quebec and a Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. She was a resident in psychiatry at the Albany Medical Center from 1961-1964.

Over the next 30 years, Dr. Smith held various positions in her field. She served as Director of Mental Health Services for Greene County, NY; New York State epidemiologist; clinical physician at the Wilton Developmental Center; Director of the New York State Employee Health Service; Physician III at the Capital District Psychiatric Center; and as a consultant with the Whitney Young Health Center and the New York State Department of Social Services. She also maintained a private psychiatric practice in Albany and Kinderhook, NY from 1964-1994. In 1976, Dr. Smith received the Redway Award from the New York State Medical Society for her work on Reyes Syndrome. She was a life member of the American Psychiatric Association.

A resident of Kinderhook, NY for 35 years, she was a member of the Kinderhook Garden Club, the Columbia County Historical Society, and an honorary member of the Old Chatham Hunt Club. She was a fabulous cook who enjoyed entertaining. She and her husband moved to Chestertown, MD in 2002.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Smith.

Dr. Smith is survived by her husband of 48 years, Herbert Friedman, Sr. of Chestertown; a son and his wife, Herbert and Sue Friedman, Jr. of Clifton Park, NY; two daughters and their husbands, Anne and David Singer of Chestertown, MD and Ivette and Carlos Alvarez of Livingston, NJ; and a daughter, Yvonne Ramos of Miami Beach, FL; a brother, John Smith of Rio Piedras, PR; five grandchildren, Rick Hackett, Charles Alvarez, Ashley Singer, Benjamin Friedman and Zachary Friedman; and a great-grandson, Rick Tyler Garcia Hackett.

A memorial service will be held on Monday June 29, 2009 at 2 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her honor to the Chester River Hospital Center, 100 Brown St., Chestertown, MD 21620 or the American Heart Association, 415 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.
