Mary Schellhorn
‘The Flower Lady’
CAIRO — Mary Schellhorn, 97, of Cairo, passed from this earthly life, while sleeping, when angels came to take her to her heavenly home.
She now rests from her labors in the arms of her Lord.
Mary was born March 2, 1912, and was the daughter of Claudio and Adelaide Cicoginia of Litchfield, Conn. She was the second of five children and a joy to her family. She loved to tell people that the doctor who delivered her said she would not live to see the morning. Boy, did she prove him wrong.
Mary was joy to all who knew her. Her wisdom, old sayings and Biblical references helped people through many a hard time. Mary was known by all as a wise, compassionate person. She was the type to help and support in the most quiet of ways. She hated the cost of greeting cards, so instead would give people an “eatable” card in the form of a favorite coffee cake or homemade noodles. She had a way about her which made her unique. People who were fortunate enough to know her learned many valuable lessons through her life experiences and by her example. She devoted her life to her family, her church and friends.
Mary was a 49-year communicant member of Resurrection Lutheran Church. For 30 years she grew, cut, arranged and delivered flowers for the altar, thus earning the name of “the flower lady” at church. She was known at church by young and old sitting in the same front row seat each Sunday. It was a rare Sunday she wasn’t there. Outside her family her church was her life.
In her younger years her garden of vegetables and flowers was a masterpiece to behold. She loved to share plants with everyone. Working close to the earth she felt close to God. Mary was famous for saying she would pray for you, no matter what the circumstance. Everyone thought she had a special line to heaven. Mary will be missed greatly as she was a second mother to many who knew her.
Mary is survived by her son Frank and wife Sandra of Windham, her daughter Elisabeth and husband Robert Petersen of Catskill, her beloved grandchildren Marc Schellhorn, Robert and Gabriala Petersen, MaryBeth, James, Eileen, Anne and Caitlin Schellhorn. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Frank in 1978 and her devoted son William in 2002. Also surviving is her loving daughter-in-law Maureen Schellhorn, a sister Jean Brown of Virginia and niece Sandra Doyle and nephew Mark Brown.
Friends are invited to call at Richards Funeral Home, 29 Bross St., Cairo, on Monday, June 22, 2:30-4:30 and 6-8 p.m. On Tuesday, June 23, friends are asked to meet at The Resurrection Lutheran Church, Cairo, at 11:30 a.m. for a celebration of life service with Pastor Victor Nelson officiating. Interment will follow in the Catskill Town Cemetery East. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church Music Program.
