Conservative Party backs Bertram, Young, Grattan and more

COLUMBIA COUNTY — The Columbia County Conservative Party Executive Committee has released a list of its endorsements for the upcoming November election. Party Chairman Matthew Torrey said the committee looked for the best candidates regardless of their other party affiliations.
“Our endorsements are for who we think can do the best job for the people,” Torrey said. “Being a small party we try to get representation as best we can.”
Torrey was reluctant to divulge specifics that the party is looking for in candidates, as it has a number of endorsement interviews left to conduct, but did say the party is not pleased with the way the current county Board of Supervisors is handling the issue of moving the Department of Social Services out of Hudson to the old Ockawamick school in Claverack. He said the way candidates responded to questions about DSS definitely influenced the committee’s decisions.
He said he feels there could be a solution where administrative and clerical positions could move, but services should probably stay in Hudson.
“We think something can be worked out,” Torrey said. “No one’s even sure what the plan is now: A, B, C, D...”
Torrey said sometimes people have the wrong idea about the party, thinking it’s all about being fiscally conservative at any cost on all issues. “Sometimes money isn’t everything when the services are more important,” Torrey said.
