'Meskada' shoots scene in Hudson

HUDSON - The body lying near the steps of the Columbia County Courthouse didn't seem to disturb anybody until, that is, director Josh Sternfeld yelled "cut" and the make-up crew ran over to touch up actor Jonathan Tucker who was playing the dead man.

A climactic scene in the independent feature film "Meskada" was shot in Hudson Monday. The city was one of a number of locations around Columbia and Greene counties where the film crew has been filming the rural police drama.

Monday, Greene County Sheriff Gregory Seeley took a star turn portraying, what else, a sheriff.

"It was fun," he said, "really great."

He said it was interesting being a real sheriff and getting to play one in the movie.

The scene revolves around the discovery of a body on the courthouse steps and a jurisdictional issue between two police agencies. According to the sheriff, the scene was very believable.

The production has both locals and Hollywood actors, including Nick Stahl, who plays the lead - small town detective Noah Cordin - and Rachel Nichols, who plays Leslie Spencer, a county sheriff's investigator.

The two characters are investigating the homicide of a young child that occurs during a break-in.

"It's been wonderful working with them," said Sternfeld. "They're both complete professionals and always 100 percent in character when they arrive on set."

Stahl is probably best known from his role as John Connor in "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines"," as well as from HBO's series "Carnivale" and 2001's "In the Bedroom."

Nichols can currently be seen in "Star Trek" and is also starring in the upcoming film "GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra" set to be released in August.

The film also stars Laura Benanti, a Tony Award winning actor, who plays Allison Connor, the distraught mother of the murder victim.

A good number of the background actors in the film are locals, according to the production staff.

In Monday's scene a number of locals were playing sheriff's deputies.

"I stumbled on it in the paper," said James Yutesler from Acra, who has been a background actor in three different scenes. He's a contractor who was able to move his schedule around in order to be in the film. "Those decks are just going to have to wait," he said laughing.

The production is still looking for more extras, but is only accepting e-mail submissions. If interested, send your information, including a recent photo, your phone number, availability for the month of June and an e-mail address to meskadatalent@gmail.com.

Monday's shoot in Hudson took the better part of a day for a scene that will probably last only a few minutes on screen.

Watching paint dry might best express what experiencing the filming of a movie is like. Scenes are shot and reshot, from different angles, from different distances and using different techniques.

But compared to many big budget films Meskada was being shot at a good clip.

"Time constraints are the biggest problem," Sternfeld said of the production. "We only have a limited number of days to shoot. We have to get a certain amount (of scenes) a day ... but we'll get it done."

This is Sternfeld's second feature film. The New York-based writer-director's first feature was 2005's "Winter Solstice," which starred Anthony LaPaglia.

The production will be shooting in the area until July 3.
