CLAVERACK - Two people were hospitalized after their car went off the Taconic State Parkway Sunday morning, in the more serious of two accidents on the southern Columbia County portion of the parkway.

Jaklin Ugras, 43, of Auburndale, Mass., was proceeding south on the parkway when she lost control of the vehicle, over-corrected, went off the road into the woods and hit a tree. She and her passenger, Yvette Vega, 46, of New Jersey, both had to be extricated by the Jaws of Life operated by the West Taghkanic Fire Company.

Trooper Peter Andrews said that Ugras suffered back injuries. Both women were transported by Greenport Rescue Squad to Albany Medical Center.

Helicopter transport was considered, but the injuries were deemed not that serious, he said. No tickets were issued.

Also responding were the Taghkanic and Churchtown fire companies. The parkway was closed down temporarily to extricate the women from the vehicle.

Later that morning, Andrews said, Maxwell Marcus, 28, of Poughkeepsie, was headed north on the Taconic on his motorcycle. At 12:20 p.m., he pulled off the Jackson Corners exit ramp, near the Dutchess County border, and stopped for a yield sign, at which point he was struck in the rear by another motorcycle driven by Alex Gazivoda, 24, also of Poughkeepsie, who was in the same party of six bikes.

Marcus was thrown from his bike, but Andrews said Gazivoda's low speed prevented worse damage.

Marcus declined medical attention on the scene from the Milan Rescue Squad, but later complained of knee pain, Andrews said. His bike was towed because of damage to a foot rest.

The trooper said Gazivoda was ticketed for following too closely, aggravated unlicensed operating out of class, being uninsured and driving an uninspected vehicle.
