COLUMBIA/GREENE COUNTIES - The production crew seemed to be in a constant state of movement as they scouted locations, their cell phones ringing constantly, and dealt with a thousand details.
They were in the midst of the final weeks of preproduction for the independent feature Film "Meskada," a rural police drama that will begin filming in Columbia and Greene counties on June 8, and run through July 2.
The film was written and is being directed by Josh Sternfeld, a New York City-based filmmaker. This is his second feature, the first being 2005's "Winter Solstice," which starred Anthony LaPaglia.
"Meskada" tells the story of two communities - one struggling, the other better-off - and how the murder of a child pits one against the other.
Sternfeld said that the film deals with small-town life in a respectful way.
He's excited to be making the film in the area, calling it beautiful and cinematic country to shoot in.
The team is still scouting locations, with between 65 to 70 percent of the locations locked down so far, said Sternfeld.
The film has a crew of 35 people and 26 speaking roles.
"The casting will be supplemented with locals extras," said Michael Goodin, one of the producers working on the film.
"There are local speaking parts," added the director.
They are looking for between 400 and 500 extras for the film.
"We're looking for all types and ages," said Sternfeld.
Local casting will take place Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Greene County Municipal Building located at 411 Main St. in the village of Catskill, room 468 on the fourth floor. Everyone entering the building must go through a security checkpoint.
The film company is also looking to rent two RVs for a month during shooting as well as a large generator or several small ones.
"The production is fully insured," mentioned Goodin.
You can contact Kamen Velkovsky at meskada@gmail.com concerning the rentals.
Besides Goodin there are three other producers working on the film, Shawn Rice, Jen Gatien and Jay Kubassek.
Goodin said that the local committees were playing an important part in the making of the film.
"Everybody has been absolutely welcoming ... in both Greene and Columbia counties," said Goodin.
Sternfeld said that he had learned a lot from "local expertise" in such subjects as law enforcement and civic government.
"It's been a really great experience," he said.
