VALATIE — Ichabod Crane Central School District voters passed the 2009-2010 budget Tuesday as well as elected four new members to fill vacant positions on the school board.
Elected to the school board were Thomas Nuefeld, Edward Harsen, Bruce E. Naramore and John Antalek.
“This budget supports our goals for the education program for our students,” stated Superintendent James P. Dexter in his press release regarding the budget adoption, “as well as the maintenance and security of our facilities and operations.”
The 2009-2010 budget, which was adopted by the Board of Education April 7, approved a spending plan of $38,447,102 which represents a budget-to-budget increase of 3.99 percent with a tax levy of 3.25 percent. During the same meeting, the board also approved a proposition to allot $290,000 for the purchase of four new school busses.
The budget was passed Tuesday by a vote of 870 for to 585 against, and the new school bus allotment was also passed with a vote of 820 for, to 622 against. School officials overall were quite pleased with the result, and a round of applause broke out when the results were announced in the high school gymnasium.
“We are glad to have the support of the public in these tough economic times,” Dexter told the Register-Star.
The four school board vacancies the candidates were running to fill included three three-year terms to replace board members whose terms are currently expiring, and one one-year term for a board member who resigned during his tenure.
There was a tie between Naramore and Nuefeld with 868 votes each, and so each of them received a three-year term. Harsen finished the election with 811 votes, receiving a three-year term, and John Antalek will fill the one-year term after receiving 746 votes. His brother, James Antalek ran a close race, coming in with 705 votes.
“I’m very pleased,” John Antalek told the Register-Star. “I’m looking forward to my one-year term.”
Aside from this, there were also 12 write-in candidates, who received one vote each, and 56 absentee ballots, which because it was such a tight race, were immediately counted toward the overall tallies listed above.
Naramore has been a resident of Kinderhook for more than 18 years and is a former museum administrator and director of Clermont State Historic Site. He is currently a private college admissions consultant who lives with his wife, Sally and two daughters.
Nuefeld was appointed to the board as an interim member on Sept. 9, 2008 and is married with two children and several grandchildren. He is currently retired, but spent more than 30 years working for the state as a director of management operations. He is also a member of the New Kinderhook School Board Foundation. “I believe in giving the child access to the best possible education,” he told the Register-Star when he decided to run for a seat on the board.
Harsen was appointed to the board as an interim member on Jan. 6, and lives with his wife, Jeanine and two sons. He is the facilities manager for Grubb and Ellis Management Services and manages property in nine different states. Though he has only been in the school district for a year and a half, Harsen is also an alternate member of the Kinderhook Town Planning Board.
John Antalek lives with his wife, Jennifer Boll and his two sons. He is a vice president at First Niagara Bank and has more than 15 years of banking experience. His decision to run for a seat on the school board was solidified by the desire to have some input into the educational system that his young son, as well as other young children in the community will soon be going through. He also has previous experience with the board of the Greenport Rescue Squad.
