Incident determined to be accidental
GHENT — Ghent firefighters had the unusual job of fighting a fire at their own firehouse Wednesday.
“It was treated like any other fire,” said Ghent Fire Chief Dan Lamarre of the blaze that destroyed their new garage that was still under construction.
The building was located on the firehouse property at 2230 Route 66 in the town of Ghent.
He said they put the fire out in about 10 minutes, but spent a total of about an hour and a half making sure it was fully out.
Eyewitness Rebecca Quinn, 27, of Chatham was on her way to Hudson when she noticed a small flame licking up the side of the structure.
“Within five minutes it was totally engulfed,” she said. “Flames were coming out from everywhere.”
According to Lamarre, one of the firefighters who lives near the station ran over to the firehouse when he saw the flames. “He pulled the hook for us,” said the chief.
Columbia County 911 was inundated with calls concerning the fire.
The Ghent Fire Department and Chatham Rescue were dispatched at 5:53 p.m.
Lamarre said they were on the blaze within “about two minutes” of the call going out, but the building was almost a total loss. The building being put up by Hill Construction was on its way to being completed for Memorial Day.
“The contractor was distraught,” said the chief.
According to Lamarre, he and the Columbia County Cause and Origin Team determined the fire was accidental and likely caused by a cigarette that was improperly disposed of.
No one was hurt.
Lamarre said they will most likely level the building’s remains and start anew.
