COLUMBIA COUNTY — To the sorrow of those who knew him, prominent and well-respected Greenport attorney Charles E. Inman passed away Friday at Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 5, 1937 in Hudson, Charles was an attorney and partner in the law firm of Coffin, Inman and Christiana, as well as a long-time member of the American, New York and Columbia County bar associations. He was also a former president of the Columbia County chapter.

Inman graduated from Hudson High School in 1955, completed his undergraduate work at Colgate University, graduating in 1959, and served for a period of time in the U.S. Army. He then moved on to what proved to be his calling, attending Albany Law School, graduating in 1964. After graduation Charles served the county in various capacities for 39 years, achieving a reputation for both fairness and trustworthiness through years of hard work.

“Charlie Inman was a friend to all,” said Gene Keeler, from the Public Defender’s office, “and he always had a laugh and a kind word for everyone.”

In addition to being an active member in his chosen field, Inman was also a dedicated member of the local community. He was a trustee of the Trinity United Methodist Church, a secretary and trustee of the finance committee of the Potts Memorial Foundation, a life member and past president of the Becraft Fire Company and a member of the Hudson Elks Club.

Though it seems like these things alone must have filled his schedule, Inman also managed to find time to be a member of the Roe Jan Boat Club, the Columbia County Republican Executive Committee, and an honorary member of the Hudson Rotary Club, among others.

Apart from these activities, he also never seemed to run out of time to help his fellow citizens, both in the law profession and out. “I met Charlie when I graduated from law school,” said long-time friend and co-worker Arlene Levinson. “He would always take the time to explain the law to a new attorney. Charlie was always a gentleman, always courteous. We are all very sorry about his passing.”

According to Levinson, Inman was also a big proponent of women in the law field, and a man with a great work ethic who still managed to maintain a sense of humor. “He could always analyze cases, and he gave us all a lot of direction here,” she said.

According to local attorney Bill Cranna, Inman was also a mentor and close personal friend of Judge Czajka, who served under Inman as an assistant district attorney. Czajka, though, was not available for comment because he was spending time with Inman’s family after the funeral, it was said.

Charles Inman is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia, of Greenport, as well as a host of other relatives including two sons, a daughter, two brothers and several grandchildren.

“He was a person well respected not only for his lawyerly skills, but for his warm and endearing personality,” Cranna told the Register-Star. “Everyone loved Charles Inman.”
