Dine out and help save lives

COLUMBIA COUNTY — Thursday is the perfect day to dine out. It’s springtime, the leaves are coming in, the sun is shining and the weather is getting steadily warmer. Oh, and of course you can’t forget that 25 percent of the proceeds made by more than 45 local restaurants will be donated to the AIDS Council of Northeastern New York.

If that’s not enough to get you off the couch and out for some fine dining, when you stop at any one of the participating restaurants you are automatically entered to win an Atlantic City getaway courtesy of Yankee Trails World Travel, a two-night stay at the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa in Lake Placid, or a $500 floral gift certificate from Brendan Flanigan Design.

This year the AIDS Council of Northeastern New York is celebrating 25 years of dedicated service to the community. Its mission is, and has always been, to reduce the risk, fear and incidence of HIV infection, encourage the independence of people living with or affected by HIV and AIDS, and to help promote the understanding of their needs.

Dining Out For Life is more than just a local even, though; internationally, more than 45 cities will raise HIV/AIDS awareness and money for local nonprofit organizations. The program has continually received more support since its local inception six years ago, and last year more than $26,000 was donated to provide essential services to those living with HIV/AIDS, and toward cutting-edge HIV prevention programs.

Participating restaurants in the Hudson area include Baba Louie’s Organic Sourdough Pizza Co., Ca’Mea Ristorante, Mexican Radio, Red Dot Restaurant and Bar, and Vico Restaurant and Bar, all of which are located on Warren Street in Hudson. Other New York cities participating include Albany, Clifton Park, Latham, Schenectady, Troy, Glens Falls, Guilderland, Broadalbin, Plattsburgh and Saratoga Springs. For a complete listing of participating restaurants in these cities, go to www.diningoutforlife.com.

The very first restaurant to support the program was Mexican Radio. “It was the first benefit we did when we opened the restaurant almost six years ago,” said owner Lori Seldon. “When we were approached about this we just jumped right in.”

Like many people and local businesses around the region, Seldon said she believes the work done by the AIDS Council is definitely something worth fighting for. In addition, she said she feels that programs like this really help bring the people of the area together, saying, “Dining Out For Life was one of the first benefits which really helped get us associated with the capital region.”

Mexican Radio will be open for lunch, dinner, and drinks on the day of the event.

Roy Felcetto, owner of Ca’Mea Ristorante, said he joined the program because he felt he should do everything he could to help. “We have always been community conscience,” he said, “and we try to help anyone that needs it.”

Ca’Mea Ristorante will also be open for lunch, dinner and drinks Thursday.

For anyone who would like to do more than just sit down at a local restaurant and eat to help with this year’s Dining Out For Life event, the program is always in need of volunteers. Each restaurant involved in the program needs a volunteer to be an “ambassador” — someone who greets diners, hands out donations and raffle envelopes, answers questions about the event, and most importantly, represents the AIDS Council. The council will also provide any necessary training, and companies as well as individuals can sponsor restaurants.
