HUDSON - A Hudson resident has been appointed by Gov. David Paterson to serve on the State Law Revision Commission.
Jay C. Carlisle II, a law professor at Pace University in White Plains, was appointed March 18 and will be serving until Dec. 31, 2012 and was sworn in earlier this month.
"As far as I know I'm the first to be appointed by Gov. Paterson," he said. "I'm very honored."
The commission examines the "common law and statutes of the State and current judicial decisions for the purpose of discovering defects and anachronisms in the law and recommending needed reforms," among other duties, according to the commission's Web site.
"It's a commission founded in 1934 ... It's the oldest commission of its kind in the world," Carlisle said.
The commission is made up of seven people total, including the chairpersons of the Senate and Assembly's committees on the Judiciary and Codes.
Carlisle called the Assembly and Senate members "the point people to get the laws passed."
The other five members are appointed by the governor, for a term of five years each.
Carlisle said that at least two members must be academics.
Carlisle has practiced law since 1970 and joined Pace in 1978.
His expertise lies in Civil Procedure Law and ethics.
"There's case law that might be ripe for change," he said of his potential role in the commission.
This is the third time he's been appointed by a New York governor to serve the state. Gov. Mario Cuomo appointed Carlisle as chairperson for the Temporary State Commission on Local Government Ethics Public Advisory Council, and Gov. George Pataki named him to a Select Committee on Cameras in the Courts.
He flew back from England where he is teaching this semester at University College London to be sworn in.
He has lived in Hudson since 1994.
