CHATHAM — Chatham hosted Germantown Tuesday in a preseason baseball scrimmage in which the Panthers won 4-1.

“We’re making good progress,” said Chatham coach Scott Steltz after his team’s final scrimmage before the regular season begins. “We have improved our fielding and our pitchers threw a lot of strikes to get ahead of the batters.”

Germantown tossed seven pitchers on the mound and coach Gary VanOrt was very pleased with what he saw from his young staff.

“I am very happy with the way the guys pitched today. It’s a good sign whenever you only give up four runs to a team like Chatham,” said VanOrt. “If we can keep all of our opponents to four runs or below then we should get a lot of wins. We just need to improve our hitting and a couple things in the field.”

Germantown opens up the regular season at home Thursday in a CHVL contest against Loudonville-Christian at 4 p.m. Chatham travels to Greenville Friday to open up Patroon Conference play at 4 p.m.

NON-LEAGUE BASEBALL

Cairo-Durham 8, Ravena 7

RAVENA — Cairo-Durham edged Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk 8-7 in non-league varsity baseball action Tuesday at RCS.

John Halligan, Hunter Phillips and Frank Hines shared pitching duties for the Mustangs, allowing seven runs, nine hits and eight walks while striking out four.

At the plate for C-D, Gary Kern hit two singles and drove in a run, Phillips hit a two-run double in the fourth inning and James Loring hit an RBI double in the second.

“We played well enough to win today,” said C-D coach Tom Karnes. “Our pitching was a little off and we had too many walks. Offensively, we came through at the plate and made some big plays when we had to.”

Next up for the ’Stangs (2-0) is non-league opponent Voorheesville Thursday at home at 4 p.m. They then open up Patroon Conference play Friday at Ichabod Crane at 4 p.m.

Watervliet 6, Coxsackie-Athens 5

COXSACKIE — Coxsackie-Athens fell short of a seventh-inning comeback in its season-opener, losing 6-5 to Watervliet in non-league varsity baseball action Tuesday at C-A.

Down 6-2 in the seventh, the Indians scored three runs to cut the lead to one. But Watervliet got the final out with the bases loaded to hang on for the win.

Bryan McDonald led the Indians at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a walk and scoring two runs. Lucas Palmateer went 1-for-1 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk.

Joey Szepessy started on the mound for C-A, allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits and striking out four over four innings.

Ryan Manning went 2-for-4 and stole a base for Watervliet, which also received three runs scored from Justin Legault.

“I feel like we let a game get away from us,” said C-A coach Curt Wilkinson. “We did not play strong defensively and allowed Watervliet to score three unearned runs. But our team never quit, they battled back.

“It is a good start for the beginning of the season. “We’re a young team and every game will help our experience.”

Coxsackie (0-1) opens up its Patroon Conference campaign against Taconic Hills Friday at 4 p.m. at home.
