HUDSON — Catskill opened the Patroon Conference tennis season with a 7-0 clean sweep of river rival Hudson Tuesday.
Both teams had a lot of question marks coming into the season after losing a number of seniors from last year. Based on the early result, the Cats seem to have found a way to fill those holes a little quicker than the Bluehawks.
“Anytime you go in with so many questions and come out with positive answers you feel good as a coach,” said Catskill coach Doug Lampman.
Top-seed Adam Khalil paced the Cats with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Hudson counterpart Krystov Fout. Billy Meyer won 6-3, 2-6, 4-6 over Ryan Martin in the No. 2 spot and Levi Fiske edged Hector Chavez 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 3. Cats’ Pat Hedges and Alex Buffa won in the fourth and fifth singles spots to seal the match, before the doubles teams of Jason Jenkins-James Maloney and Connor Murphy-Logan Weiss took the court and completed the shutout.
“I’m very happy with the effort put out tonight by the whole team,” said Lampman. “I’m especially impressed by Billy Meyer’s comeback. I’m real satisfied with our first-year players, they played their game tonight without intimidation.”
Catskill (1-0) returns to action at home against defending Patroon champ Ichabod Crane today at 4 p.m. while Hudson (0-1) travels to Cairo-Durham.
“Overall I thought all of the kids played really well for the first match of the year,” wrote Hudson coach Rocco Porreca in an e-mail. “Hector Chavez and Ryan Martin played very hard and showed a lot of hustle. We have a very young and talented team and I look forward to the rest of the season.”
