HUDSON — Hudson Middle School has been taken off the New York State Education Department’s schools in need of improvement list under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Greenport Elementary remains on the list as a year two school in need of improvement. The SED released the information Tuesday.

Title I schools that fail to show adequate yearly progress for two years in a row in the same subject and grade are considered in need of improvement. Adequate yearly progress (AYP) is the minimum level of performance school districts and schools must achieve every year to meet this goal.

Title I schools in need of improvement must develop a plan for improvement and involve parents in the plan.

Under the state’s NCLB accountability system, schools and districts are responsible for the performance of every “disaggregated” group, which include low-income students, students with disabilities, limited English proficient students, and racial and ethnic groups, in which at least 30 students participate in the grades three through eight math or English tests.

The middle school being taken off the list was based on the academic performance of several students with disabilities. HMS is one of 85 schools that have been taken off the list due to making AYP for two years in a row in all areas they were identified in.

“Obviously we’re very pleased,” Hudson City School District Superintendent Jack Howe said of the middle school’s performance.

He said the success of the school was due to the collaborative efforts of the administration and teaching staff.

School Board member Peter Meyer’s response to the news was slightly more tempered.

“I appreciate the improvement made by the middle school, though its Corrective Action status means it has much farther to go,” he told the Register-Star. “And I’m hoping the new Intermediate School, grades three through six, in that building will help.”

Under NCLB, schools enter “Corrective Action” status when they fail to make AYP for four years in a row.

As of next school year, the Hudson Middle School will house third through sixth grades. A wing for the seventh and eighth grades is being built at the high school, kindergarten through second grade will be at John L. Edwards Elementary School and Greenport Elementary will be closed.

Because of the changes, Greenport’s status may cease to exist, but, said Howe, that doesn’t change the need for the district to improve student performance. He said they would continue to identify and address students’ needs. Greenport was identified as being in need of improvement due to test scores in the elementary-middle level English language arts.

Meyer said he feels that Greenport Elementary’s academic problems stem from curriculum issues at John L. Edwards.

“Though Greenport has done a terrific job in the last several years, our third and fourth-grade scores are really the result of what is done, and not done, at JLE,” he said.

Greenport Elementary was one of 543 elementary, middle and high schools identified by the SED as “in Need of Improvement.”
