Theater to screen film shot locally

Masterson Q&A will follow showing of ‘Cake Eaters’ at Community Theater

CATSKILL — Heralded as a “quickie, small town, ensemble drama” with superior acting, “The Cake Eaters” is set to draw an impressive crowd for its premiere in Catskill tonight — on the very same streets where it was filmed.

Shot over 20 days in June 2006, the film captured the bucolic imagery of communities like Catskill, Cairo, Athens and Hudson to represent the rural setting of upstate New York.

“I needed a class Main Street,” said actress-turned-director Mary Stuart Masterson, “that had beautiful, well-maintained architecture, great history and real, beautiful rural landscapes.”

The film also features scenes of the Community Theatre, 343 Main St. in Catskill, where it will be premiering 7 p.m. tonight. On Saturday, a question and answer session with Masterson will be held after a 7 p.m. screening.

Masterson, who has made her directorial debut with “The Cake Eaters,” says she spends five days out of the week living at her home in Columbia County, just north of the city of Hudson.

“I love it up there,” she said during a phone interview. “It was like the dream area to live in.”

Some scenes for the film were shot at the Iron Horse Bar in Hudson, a bar which once served as the backdrop for pool-sharking in “Nobody’s Fool” (1994) with Paul Newman and Bruce Willis, while the majority was shot on Main Street in Catskill.

Catskill, Masterson says, was the perfect setting for the depth she wanted to present in the film, providing a perfect mixed bag of historical significance and a community in the midst of an economic revitalization, while simultaneously wanting to preserve its rural character.

“I really loved the high train trestle, seemingly above the village,” Masterson said. “It really represents a town where the train doesn’t actually stop, but at the same time the townsfolk don’t really want it to.”

Actress Kristen Stewart (”Twilight”) stars in the film as Georgia Kaminski, and suffers from a rare life-threatening affliction which has instilled a carnal desire, interlocking the lives of two families with their own unusual personal quirks.

Production of the film was very much a community affair, with scenes shot at a local barber shop in Catskill, up and down Main Street, various locations in Cairo and at a home on the waterfront in Athens.

“Everybody was so easy to work with, it was really a great experience overall,” said Masterson. “Not very often do we have mayors who volunteer to be extras.”

Catskill Village President Vincent Seeley was extremely gung ho about being in the film as an extra, she said, though he might be disappointed to find out he had to be cut from the film in the interest of time constraints.

“I hope he’s not too upset about it,” she said.

The running time for the film is a compact 86 minutes and will be featured at The Community Theatre all week, with $4 matinee showings at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

“The Cake Eaters” was written by Jayce Bartok, who also appears in the film, and stars Stewart, Aaron Stanford, Bruce Dern, Talia Balsam, Elizabeth Ashley, Miriam Shor, Jesse L. Martin and Melissa Leo.

The film is the winner of four independent film awards: Ashland Independent Film Festival 2008 Audience Award, Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival 2007 People’s Choice Award, Sedon International Film Festival 2008 Discovery Award and Stony Brook Film Festival 2008 Best Feature.
