Incumbent justice claims victory
Unusually high turnout for Chatham village election
By Sesame Campbell
CHATHAM — In a highly contested election, Village Justice Mark Portin beat opponent Garth Slocum by a landslide victory of 132 to 48 votes.
“I feel really good and relieved to be re-elected,” Portin said. “I am very happy that I get to do this again. I am very indebted for Mrs. Dixon and her daughter Kelly, and to all the people who helped. They worked very hard to support me and get people out to vote.”
It was a particularly poignant moment for Portin, who was joined by Mrs. Dixon, widow of former Justice George Dixon, who served as village justice for 34 years. Today would have been her husband’s birthday, she said, adding that he would have been proud.
“I think it is wonderful that Portin was re-elected,” Dixon said. “He’s been doing a great job replacing my husband.”
Village Trustees Pat Wemitt and Lael Locke were also re-elected by 143 votes each. “I’m delighted to serve again,” Wemitt said. “It’s a pleasure and an honor to be re-elected by the community.”
Locke agreed. She added that a surprising number of people came to the polls this election. “There’s a lot dissent in the village. I’m sorry that no one from the Taxing Matters group put forward a candidate. It would have made things more interesting.”
Village Mayor Paul Boehme, who has served as mayor of the village of Chatham since 1987, was again uncontested in his re-election as mayor. He was re-elected with 153 votes. “It feels really good that this many people came out to show their support,” he said.
The mayor said that his first order of business would be to finish the DOT project. Similarly, he said there are plans to begin sidewalks from Edgewood Acres to the village line. Thirdly, he said he looks forward to the installation of a new waterline on Railroad Avenue and Spring Street. And finally, the mayor said he anticipates improvements on Thomas Street and School Street, with new drainage, sidewalks and new topping for the roadway.
