HUDSON — Construction continues at two of the Hudson City School District’s school buildings.
“It’s on time and under budget,” said district Building and Grounds Supervisor George Keeler.
The district’s taxpayers voted to spend $36,650,000 in 2006 for the project, which is being overseen by the construction firm Barry, Bette and LaDuke.
A wing for the seventh and eighth grades is being built at the High School. The project is scheduled to be done before the beginning of the 2009-10 school year. So far, said Keeler, 50 percent of the building’s exterior is completed and 70 to 80 percent of the roof is up.
Although the High School and seventh and eighth grades will be on the same campus they will only be sharing the cafeteria, with different lunch times scheduled for each.
Besides shifting the seventh and eighth graders, there are other changes afoot.
Greenport Elementary will be closed, kindergarten through second grade will be at John L. Edwards Elementary School and the Hudson Middle School will house third through sixth grades. Other changes include who will be running what, and where.
Tom Baumgartner, who is the current Greenport Elementary principal, will be the principal of Montgomery C. Smith for the 2009-10 school year; Derek Reardon, currently the associate principal for Hudson High School, will be the principal of the Junior High; and Mark Brenneman will move from being the Montgomery C. Smith associate principal — along with Maria Suttmeier — to being the associate principal of the High School.
Over at ELJ, the construction of the wing to house all pre-kindergarten students is continuing as well. Keeler said that the exterior brickwork was continuing, while inside plumbing and heating was being put in.
As to the building of a play ground at ELJ, Keeler said that the committee looking into the subject would probably be presenting its findings at the March 24 Board of Education meeting.
