Village taking step to help save energy

VALATIE — In an effort to help the environment and villagers wallets, Valatie will be giving out free $10 coupons for energy-efficient light bulbs.

The coupons can picked up at the village hall in Valatie after Feb. 1, and are redeemable at Mario’s True Value on Route 9, which will sell the incandescent bulbs at cost. Mario’s worked with General Electric to get a bulk deal on the bulbs.

The coupons are for residents of the village of Valatie only, and should save citizens around $60 a year in energy costs, according to Mayor Gary Strevell. The money saved may not seem like a lot, Strevell says, but when the $60 is multiplied by the 650 houses in the village the returns for the local economy add up.

“It’s the right thing to do for the environment,” Village Trustee Paul Raihofer said, “and its the right thing to do for our citizens.”

Working with statistics from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, Strevell says that the village’s action can serve as an example for other local governments around the state. NYSERDA studies say that if every household in the state replaced their five most used lights with the new, earth-friendly bulbs, the reduction in carbon dioxide would be equivalent of taking 30,000 cars off the road.

The money for the coupons came from loans paid back by homeowners from a home rehabilitation grant dating back to 1986.

“This is the right use for the money,” Strevell says, “and it’s going to come back into the economy again.”

“Obviously solar is too expensive for most of us,” Raihofer said. “But if everyone in the village uses the coupons it will actually make a difference.”

Strevell says there’s no cutoff date for the coupons in the near future.
