Gordon easily tops McLaughlin

COLUMBIA COUNTY — In the fight for the 108th Assembly District seat incumbent Tim Gordon came out on top to secure his second term with a comfortable victory.

Gordon, a member of the Independence Party, captured approximately 66 percent of the vote Tuesday, with 34,289 votes. Contender Steven McLaughlin, a member of the Conservative Party, had received 22,610 votes or about 34 percent. In Greene County, Gordon secured 2,250 votes and McLaughlin received 1,886 votes.

All results are unofficial pending routine recanvassing and counting of absentee ballots.

With his second consecutive election victory, and another two years ahead of him, Gordon has picked up his stride and is ready to take on Albany once again.

“It is satisfying,” said Gordon. “We’re going to continue the initiatives we’ve been working on in the first term.”

Supported by the Democrats, Gordon will represent the towns of Coxsackie and New Baltimore in Albany, as well as, the Columbia County towns of Chatham, Kinderhook, New Lebanon, and Stuyvesant.

Going forward, Gordon intends to work harder to reform real property taxes, change the way we fund our schools and hasten our reliance on home grown energy.

He is also a staunch believer that agriculture and infrastructure are key to the growth of the region, and has won the favor of many in the agriculture industry.

“I’ve very pleased that voters in Greene County and Columbia County supported me this year,” he said. “We’ve worked hard for the people there and really appreciate the support.”

When he heads back to Albany his first order of business will be to continue representing the people that have re-elected him, and help address the needs of his constituency.

Gordon, a husband and father of four, is a resident of Bethlehem and received his Bachelor’s Degree in History from SUNY Brockport.

While faced with defeat, McLaughlin says he still is not giving up his fight for those that did support him. He intends to continue his pursuit in changing the political landscape, and serving the people.

“I think politics is in your blood,” said McLaughlin. “And you want to serve the people.”

McLaughlin is encouraged by the 22,610 supporters out there and is looking to run again in 2010.

“We worked as hard as we could,” he said. “We were under funded and it is was really a grassroots effort... I think we made a good showing.”

Assemblyman Peter Lopez (R-Schoharie) of the 127th District, who was unopposed, is encouraged by the record participation in the voter turnout and excited about returning to Albany.

“The good news is that people are energized and came to the polls,” said Lopez. “The next challenge is to move past the election and get to the real business of governing.”

Lopez will continue to work across party lines to reform property taxes and alleviate the gridlock in Albany.

“My practice is that we work with people of good faith and people of conviction,” said Lopez. “None of us can effect positive change by ourselves.”

Though he was unopposed, Lopez tallied 9,157.
