ANCRAM — Ancram voters elected two Democrats and a Republican to the Town Board Tuesday. Ancramdale dairy farmer James P. Miller, a Republican, won a three-year term, and Democrats Donna Hoyt, proprietor of the Ancram Hotel, and Robert Mayhew Jr., a construction contractor, each won a one-year term.
Miller defeated Democratic Committee Vice-Chairwoman Madeleine Israel by a vote of 368 to 279. He did equally well at either polling place, garnering 205 votes in the first district and 163 in the second to Israel’s 149 in the first and 130 in the second.
Hoyt was the next highest votegetter after Miller, receiving 347 votes, 186 in the first district and 161 in the second. Mayhew was next, with 335 votes. He tied with Miller for tops in the second district at 163, and received 172 in the first. Farmer Dennis Sigler, a Republican, finished fourth with 287 votes, and fellow Republican Chris Thomas, a manager for a fuel distributorship, finished sixth with 273 votes.
Miller, whose family has lived in Ancram for more than two centuries, told the Register-Star in October he would like to bring more businesses to town, and opposes burdensome regulations on businesses.
Hoyt said she wants to address what she considers unfair assessments in town, looks to the Comprehensive Plan to change zoning to allow for growth, and would like to see more affordable housing.
Mayhew, who also wants to focus on the assessments and townwide planning, stressed the need for better communications throughout the town, and is working on a newsletter.
The three vacancies opened up when long-time board members James D. Bryant, Gerald F. Roberts and Robert Podris resigned from the board in the third week of August. Gov. David Paterson subsequently appointed Jack Lindsey to bring the board back to a quorum of three. Lindsey, however, said he wouldn’t run in the fall election, meaning that three seats were available.
All election results are unofficial pending routine recanvassing and the counting of absentee ballots.
