Lady Spartans crash Lady Cats’ homecoming

Greenville 3, Catskill 2

CATSKILL — Greenville won a back and forth match 3-2 over Catskill in Patroon Conference varsity volleyball action Saturday at Catskill.

Greenville claimed the first game 25-19, but Catskill roared back to a 2-1 lead by winning the next two 25-11, 25-23. The Lady Spartans regained their bearings in the fourth game, winning 25-19 and proceeded to win the deciding game 25-17.

“It was a defensive battle. We had some critical serves in the final game and the girls left it on the floor,” said Greenville coach Justin Bruce.

Standing out for Greenville were Tori Weidman with 20 points on 28-for-28 serving, Sophia Mastrantuono with 11 points on 16-for-18 serving, five blocks and six kills, Brenna Buscher with nine digs and Courtney McDonald with 11 digs.

Leading the Lady Cats were Sierra Rocco with 21 service points and two kills, Judy Lam with 12 service points, Ryan Wilhelm with 12 service points and five kills and Beth Sira with nine kills.

“Greenville is very strong, they cover everything they outplayed us a little bit at the net. We weren’t able to set up our ending attacks,” said Catskill coach Stacy Collier.

In the JV game, Catskill prevailed 2-0, with game scores of 25-23, 25-23.

Greenville (17-2, 14-2) hosts Taconic Hills Monday at 4 p.m. while Catskill (10-7) wraps up its Patroon Conference schedule Tuesday at Cairo-Durham at 4 p.m.

Coxsackie-Athens 3, Cairo-Durham 0

COXSACKIE — Coxsackie-Athens shut out Cairo-Durham with game scores of 25-21, 25-14 and 26-24 in Patroon Conference varsity volleyball action Saturday at Coxsackie.

“It was the senior game today, so it was nice to get a victory,” said C-A coach Dave Carlson. “The girls played great and had good communication and excellent control. “We’re looking forward to heading to Taconic Hills, to see if we can do the same thing there.”

Leading the Lady Indians were Kylene Busch with two aces, nine digs and three kills, Julie Ferenczy with two aces, six digs and three kills, Chyenne Hillicos with five aces, six digs and three kills, Kayla Restco with one ace, five digs and four kills and Regina Peterson with one ace and one kill.

Coxsackie-Athens (6-11) travels to Taconic Hills while Cairo-Durham hosts Catskill Tuesday at 4 p.m.

SECTION II TENNIS

SCHENECTADY — Catskill sent six players to the Section II individual tennis tournament, Friday at Central Park in Schenectady, according to a release from Catskill coach Jim Guldenstern. Representing the Lady Cats were Stephanie Wilhelm and Sarah Mokszycki in the singles competition and the doubles teams of Susan Falotico/Sarah Riccobono and Nicole Riley/Kelly Maggio.

On the individual side, Catskill’s top individual player Wilhelm fell in the second round to an opponent from Burnt Hills,.

“She is the kind of player that is a dream to coach. Never a cross word, never a temper tantrum, never an unfair line call,” wrote Guldenstern.

Meanwhile, Mokszycki won two matches before falling to number-one seed Sarah Kandath of Albany Academy.

“After an undefeated season, she might have learned more in that hour than she has all year,” Guldenstern said of Mokszycki.

In the doubles bracket, the duo of Nicole Riley and Kelly Maggio won a qualifier match, and proceeded to win two more matches before falling to Guilderland.

“Their serves came in like spinning bombs, knocking the rackets right out of our hands,” wrote Guldenstern about their Guilderland opponents. “Nicole and Kelly have improved greatly and will be back for more next season,”

The doubles team of Susan Falotico and Sarah Riccobono was defeated in the first round by Holy Names.

“Susan Falotico and Sarah Riccobono weren’t lucky in the draw and Holy Names made short work of them. My girls took it with aplomb,” wrote Guldenstern.

Morrison/Meath (Glens Falls), 8-0; Riley/Maggio def. Hennrick/Brophy (Greenwich), 10-6; Riley/Maggio lost to Peda/Ackerman (Guilderland), 0-10.


PATROON BOYS SOCCER

Taconic Hills 2, Hudson 1

HUDSON — Taconic Hills picked up its first win of the year with a 2-1 victory over Hudson Saturday at Hudson, according to a release from Hudson coach Joe Nero.

The Titans fell behind 1-0 in the first half when Estuardo Rodriguez scored off an assist from Nayeem Hossain. The second half was another story though, as Dylan Ruffner scored twice to complete the comeback.

“I felt really good that we were up 1-0 at half-time,” Nero said. “In the second half, we came out totally flat. Taconic Hills took it right to us and dominated the entire second half of play.

Pat Daly made 18 saves for Hudson, while Pat Farrell made 11 saves for Taconic Hills.

Hudson (4-12, 3-11) hosts Maple Hill Monday at 4 p.m.

Coxsackie-Athens 1, Cairo-Durham 1

COXSACKIE — Coxsackie-Athens and Cairo-Durham played to a 1-1 tie in Patroon Conference varsity soccer action Saturday at Coxsackie.

“I thought it was a hard-fought game,” said C-A coach Curt Wilkinson. “It was back and forth with both defenses playing very well. A good game between two sectional teams.”

The Indians took the lead in the first half when Nathan Barbour scored off an assist from Billy Steele. C-D responded midway through the second half, knotting the game when Hunter Phillips scored off an assist from Stephen Zwoboda.

Peter Russo made 12 saves on 15 shots for C-A while Cory Gransbury made seven saves on eight shots for the Mustangs.

Cairo-Durham returns to action at Chatham Monday at 4 p.m.

Greenville 2, Catskill 0

CATSKILL — Greenville knocked off Catskill 2-0 in Patroon Conference varsity soccer action Saturday at Catskill.

George Harvey and Dave Vogel scored for the Spartans, both off assists from Mike Sanchez.

Andrew Clark made 15 saves for Greenville, while Ricky Meyers made six saves for Catskill.

The Spartans earned six corner kicks to the Cats’ three.

“I think we did a very good job today controlling the ball. “It was unfortunate that we couldn’t score any goals,” said Catskill coach Dwain Heath. “They capitalized on their opportunities when they got down into our third.”

The Cats end the regular season 3-14-1.

“I think my seniors did a very good job carrying our team this year. I’m looking forward to next years season,” Heath added.

PATROON JV BOYS SOCCER

Hudson 6, Taconic Hills 0

HUDSON — Hudson pounded Taconic Hills 6-0 in Patroon Conference JV soccer action Saturday at Hudson.

Roodley Dorce led the Bluehawks with five goals, while Hector Chavez had a goal and two assists and Ian Hunter added one assist. Nick Alger made ten saves in the shutout.

“It was a great defensive effort by Johnwick Nathan and Zach Sahotra,” said Hudson coach Ken Hollenbeck.

PATROON GIRLS SOCCER

Coxsackie-Athens 3, Cairo-Durham 0

COXSACKIE — Coxsackie-Athens topped Cairo-Durham 3-0 in Patroon Conference varsity soccer action Saturday at Coxsackie.

Emily Proper opened the scoring for the Lady Indians off an assist from Kelsey Lenney. Lenney then doubled the lead with an unassisted goal. Danielle Chiudina sealed the game with the third goal off a Gillian Stippa assist.

C-A keeper Jenna Morse made six saves on 10 shots in the shutout while Alison Scholbohm grabbed 14 saves on 23 shots for the Lady Mustangs.

“We played very, very well. It’s nice to get three wins in a row,” said C-A coach Mark Lenney. “I can’t say enough about the seniors and how they picked up the game. They really made everybody around them better today.”

Coxsackie-Athens (8-8, 6-8) travels to Greenville Monday at 4 p.m.

REINFURT FOOTBALL

Albany Academy 21, Hudson 7

ALBANY — Hudson fell to Reinfurt Division foe Albany Academy 21-7 in varsity football action Saturday at Albany, according to a release from Hudson coach Bob LaCasse.

The Bluehawks led the game 7-0 in the second quarter when Talib Barksdale scored on a two yard run, but Albany Academy responded with 21 unanswered points to claim the victory.

Hudson found most of its success on the ground, led by Paul Gray with 98 yards on 17 rushes. Barksdale finished with 69 yards passing on 6-for-17 passing to go along with his rushing score.

Nevin Sheldon hauled in four catches for 42 yards, Gershom Keith had 17 receiving yards on one catch and Gray had a ten yard reception.

Leading Hudson defensively were Nick Zapp with nine solo tackles and four assists, Brandon Williams with six solo tackles, three assists and a fumble recovery, Keith with six solo tackles, two assists and an interception, Mike Rigos with six solo tackles, three assists and an interception, Scott Merritt with three solo tackles, three assists and a fumble recovery and Jon Carpenito with a tackle and an interception.

The Bluehawks finish Reinfurt Division play with a 2-5 record.


NON-LEAGUE CROSS COUNTRY

Girls: Catskill 18, Greenville 44, Cairo-Durham Inc.

GREENPORT — For the fifth time, the Greene County high schools that compete in cross country faced each other in a triangular meet to share their enthusiasm for the sport and to determine bragging rights for the season, according to a release from Catskill coach Ed Synan. Catskill won the boys and girls races, led by Gabe Sturges and Schae Auffant, respectively. The meet was held at Olana on Friday.

Columbia County Whalers 38, North Troy 32

TROY — The Columbia County Whalers Jr. Pee Wee Pop Warner football team defeated North Troy 38-32 Saturday at Troy, according to an e-mail from Alfred Bartolotta.

“Both teams played an outstanding offensive game,” Bartolotta wrote.

The Whalers (5-2) finish up the regular season against North Colonie Sunday, October 26 at Hudson Middle School.


BARD COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Bard 3, Cazenovia 2

ANNANDALE —

Bard College edged Cazenovia College 3-2 in a women’s volleyball action Saturday at Bard.

The Lady Raptors fell into a 2-0 hole when Cazenovia took the opening two games 27-25, 25-20. They responded strongly, though, taking the final three games 25-17, 25-23, 15-13.

Leading Bard were Aleks Romano with 12 kills, 16 assists and 13 digs and Rachel Van Horn with 10 kills.

The Lady Raptors (9-6, 4-3) host College of St. Elizabeth Tuesday at 7 p.m.
