Firearm burglar arrested By Andrew AmelinckxHudson-Catskill newspapers CHATHAM — The Chatham Police Department arrested a Chatham man Tuesday in connection with a Aug. 13 burglary on Kinderhook Street in the village of Chatham. Duane D. McEwan, 28, has been charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors for a burglary of a private residence where two handguns and ammunition were stolen along with some cash. “They were .22-caliber and .40-caliber semi-automatic handguns,” said Deputy Chief Mark Leggett. Police had made the case a priority and asked for the public’s assistance because of the guns being “unsecured and exposed to the community,” according to a department statement. McEwan is facing second-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny, petit larceny and fourth-degree criminal mischief. He was arraigned before Chatham Village Justice Mark Portin and is being detained in the Columbia County Jail without bail until his preliminary hearing. Chatham police wanted to thank the public for its assistance.
