MVB site celebrates Harvest Day By Andrew AmelinckxHudson-Catskill Newspapers KINDERHOOK - The sounds of a metal hammer banging on a piece of steel, the bleats of sheep, and an old tune drifted through the air that smelled of an open fire. A man and woman, dressed in their Sunday best - hoop skirt for her, top hat for him - sauntered past on their way to the stately mansion in the distance. Lindenwald, the home of the eighth President of the United States, Martin Van Buren, took on the aspect of an early 19th Century agrarian community on Saturday. The National Park Service run site located in Kinderhook held its fifth annual Harvest Day event, which included everything from butter churning demonstrations to live music of the era. “Harvest Day at Lindenwald celebrates the importance of agriculture to our 8th President and to Columbia County today,” said Jim McKay, chief ranger for the park.
